We met Julie and Ella, our backroads
leaders, in our lobby. We drove to the first hike a short 2 miles up and
old sugar plantation finishing with this marvelous view over Kitts and its
Airport. Jane had opted out halfway up the hill as it was a hot day and she was exhausted. She had company. Ray the father of the other family had also opted out having back issues.
On the way back down the path, Zeke Theo and I lagged behind. Had a little debate interpreting our map, and would have certainly gone the wrong way had I not known the exact point where Jane departed on the way up.
We stopped at Milliken Estates where we enjoyed a feast from Joan
Napier who married into the Milliken family. She spoke of the history of
sugarcane in the area and the years of hurricanes her humble house had
survived.
We drove down to reggae beach where we got a charter boat.
It crossed the shallows from St Kitts to the Four Seasons on Nevis where we were received with drinks and Cooling towels and settled into our rooms.
We dined at bananas that evening a restaurant up in the hills that started as a food cart or at least that's what Ella told me. I happened to bump into the owner that evening and remark about her humble starts to which she replied it most certainly did not start as a food cart. I suspect her offense was mostly theater sounding even more convincing in her Brit accent. But I did have to apologize. I enjoyed getting to meet her and comparing her northern Britain accent to a friend she was speaking with from southern Britain. I complimented her on her impressive restaurant, to which she humbly replied that she thinks perhaps she's outgrown her optimal size. Very easy conversation. Soon though Julie found me and pointed out that everyone else was in the van ready to depart.
